Copyright’s no joke, and a woman who runs a cake business learned how serious a copyright violation might be.

The Mukaishima Metropolitan Police Department charged a Tokyo-based baker with violating copyright laws by selling unlicensed Demon Slayer franchise cakes.

We’d love a slice of Tanjiro, and it appears that it’s a popular choice since the defendant generated around 6.5 million yen selling sweet Demon Slayer cakes since July 2019.

On Instagram, she sold each cake for 13,000 to 15,000 yen, translating to about US$113.97 to US$131.50.

After a production firm saw her cakes on Instagram, they contacted the authorities, and the defendant is now facing charges.

The baker admitted to the charge and said that she believed the desserts would sell nicely because of the popularity of the anime characters at the time.
